Abortion rights vs the BIGGER picture

Kate Michelman, an abortion rights advocate is considering entering the PA senate race in 2006. this is horrible news for progressives in pennsylvania. Casey our state treasurer, is currently leading the incumbent santorum in all pa polls.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this state is not in good shape. Yes, we have a blue governor, but rick santorum (the number 2 republican in the senate) and arlen spector are by no means progressive or willing to break ranks with the president and this crime family. from abortion rights to the alito hearings to the war, the patriot act, privatization, destruction of our environment and certainly not least of all the corporatization of the state and the nation these two senators are unfit to represent this state. these senators are not capable of independent thought. we need them both out of this state asap. santorum is leaving this fall, hopefully. we need his anti woman's rights ass to leave in a hurry. we cannot afford for him to win another 6 years here, and we cannot afford for him to develop a career in politics that might include the white house, or the senate majority/minority leader position.
How does Michelman pose a threat? If Michelman is capable (which she seems she is) of splitting the votes in pa amongst the progressives and the progressives trying to unseat santorum first, then we are all in a worse situation than before. Not only do we need casey for a senator now, but we also need him for post 2k6 elections which include a possible impeachment of the president.
Who would i prefer Michelman or Casey? good question, Michelman is pro choice, much more than i can say for casey. but because roe v. wade is not in question here in this state and not in the country (yet, a big fuck you goes out to the polluted mind of south dakota govenor mike rounds who feels that the fewer than 5 abortion providers in the state are at risk of destroying the culture of life that exists in this country, (http://www.guttmacher.org/in-the-know/in-the-know.pdf)). I would without a doubt prefer Michelman, did she file to late? yes. will she destroy the ability for pennsylvanians to elect a somewhat progressive? yes. i hope that over time she considers what repercussions her actions have.
p.s. tomorrow is international womans rights day.
